The Essence of Love

Love gives freely.

We open our hand

as our beloved flies away.

For to grasp and hold

is to crush the very love

we seek to retain.

Chapter Seventeen

Ballad

Nidrani rested on her side, propped up on one elbow, and contemplated Imarin. Every time she'd roused during the night, he'd been awake, just like this.

Imarin lay on his back next to her, staring at the ceiling. “I can block out Keth, if I try, but not Arda. He's always there in the back of my mind. It's worse since we linked together to contact Brad. Before we linked, I could minimize my awareness of him to a pinpoint.”

“Do you want to find a place by ourselves? It would be easier if we weren't so close.” She'd felt Arda and Brad last night, too; their anger, passion, and at last, their delight in each other. Nidrani waited while Imarin turned on his side and gazed at her.

“No, I don't want to find another place.” He continued to stare into her eyes, troubled but decisive. “I'd rather be here and find out what's going on than imagine it.”

Inhaling Imarin's musk-and-cinnamon scent, Nidrani leaned over and kissed him on the lips. He groaned. She trailed one hand down his chest to his groin, enjoying the feel of his smooth skin. She grasped his swollen sex in one hand and began to stroke him. He started, becoming even harder than before.

“This isn't about you.” He knocked her hand away from his sex and tried to sit up, but she leaned on him and pushed him down.

As if she didn't understand. She wanted to slap him, get him out of his own head. “Don't worry too much about where your desire is coming from. I'm not.”

“Nidri, no.” Imra began to reach out to remove her hand.

“Not now. Let me enjoy you.” She used to consider it important for Imarin to desire her for herself. How foolish it seemed now. She watched as Imarin sighed and relaxed back into the bed, and she gave herself over to pleasuring him.

She waited until Imarin drifted off to sleep; then she slipped out of bed and padded over to the window. Her heart pounded and her body throbbed with unspent desire. She lifted her rill quietly from its case, crept from the room, and climbed the stairs to the roof. She'd play for a while, up here where she wouldn't disturb anyone. She wandered over to the plastisteel railing and stared over the city. The first rays of morning sun colored the clouds a pale rose. The wind picked up and lifted a strand of her hair and blew it back over her shoulder. Sighing, she trembled as the wind blew under her wrap, and she moved away from the railing. After she dropped the cushion she'd carried onto the roof's hard surface, she sat and started to tune her rill. What to play?

“I didn't believe anyone else would be up here.” Brad's voice called her out of her reflections. “Do you come up here often?”

“I come up here most mornings at sunrise to play my rill.
